Day Five. Documentation, Pilates and Object Handling

Today saw the first day of practical activities at the museum.

Pieta kicked off the day with an introductory lecture into Conservation.  She showed the participants lots of pictures of projects members of the team had worked on and told them about the different techniques conservators use.

After an impromptu mini exercise session, Helen gave a lecture about documentation procedures and techniques and then we broke into groups to do some practical object handling training.  This was a lively session where the participants learned how to handle different materials and objects of all sizes.    Popular objects amongst the groups were a hide miners bag and a copper alloy jug.

The rest of the day continued with the theme of documentation with the participants completing activities of photography, drawing and written object descriptions.

Drawing objects is not only a great form of documentation but also causes the students to look at their objects much more closely and carefully meaning that they begin to discover far more information than they first thought possible.

Besfort teaches the participants why a clear and well labelled photograph is so important......with a little help from his improvised scale holder (other brands of cigarettes are also available)
